Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the reported killing of Brigadier-General Musa Uba by ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province) terrorists, describing it as a “failure of political leadership” on the part of President Bola Tinubu.
In a social media post, Atiku said he is “deeply saddened and extremely shocked and disturbed” by reports of Gen. Uba’s death, especially in light of conflicting narratives from the military. Initial denials by the army, he noted, appeared to be at odds with accounts emerging on social media and from insurgent sources.
He accused President Tinubu of being “more interested in decimating the opposition by all means possible, while forgetting his crucial role as Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces.” According to Atiku, the death of Gen. Musa — “along with the deaths of some of the troops he was leading” — marks “one death too many” and signals a dangerous resurgence by terrorist forces in Nigeria.
Atiku urged unity and resilience among citizens and military personnel, offering condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the family of Gen. Uba. He also issued a sharp warning to the presidency: “The security of the lives of our people is your primary responsibility and you must live up to it or be humble enough to admit incompetence and either ask for help or resign.”
Pulling no punches, Atiku laid out his own vision for tackling insurgency: “If I were President, I would order the military to occupy Borno State or any state under siege by bandits or armed groups until they clear those areas.” He argued that such a step would reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to protecting its soldiers and citizens alike.
He closed his remarks with a prayer and a note of hope: “May this dark period pass over us as a nation, sooner than later.”
